Morning can be the most stressful time of day for families with young children. But it doesn't have to be. Here are 7 strategies that actually work.
1. Prepare Everything the Night Before
Clothes chosen, backpack ready, lunchbox organized. Every decision you eliminate in the morning is mental energy preserved.
2. Wake Up Before the Kids
Even if it's just 15 minutes. Having your coffee in peace completely changes your ability to handle the chaos ahead.
3. Use the Routine Chart as an Ally
Instead of repeating 'brush your teeth, brush your teeth,' point to the chart. The discussion ends when the authority is the chart, not you.
Let the child 'mark' each completed task with a sticker or magnet — gamification works!
4. Create Songs for Each Step
A short song for brushing teeth, another for getting dressed. Music marks time and makes the task playful.
5. Avoid Screens Before Leaving
TV or tablet in the morning is a recipe for tantrums when it's time to turn off. Save it for after school.
6. Have a 15-Minute Buffer
If you need to leave at 7:30, plan to be ready at 7:15. Unexpected things happen, especially with children.
7. Celebrate Small Wins
Made it out on time? Celebrate! This reinforces positive behavior for the whole family.
